Baltimore Retailer Summit Charity Auction Nabs $5K for CBLDF, ProLiteracy & Hero Initiative

In addition to numerous opportunities to interact and learn from each other in an educational, entertaining and professional atmosphere, the 2009 Diamond/Alliance Retailer Summit in Baltimore saw attending retailers help three important,industry-related causes by raising $5,000 through Charity Auctions!

Miracleman #1 Gold Ed. Signed by Alan Moore #55 of 400 (1985) - Purchased for $600 donation to CBLDF by Bret Parks, owner of Winston-Salem, NC's Ssalefish Comics (donated by Fantasy Books & Games) This year, the top item was an extremely rare copy of Miracleman #1 Gold Edition, signed by Alan Moore and donated by Fantasy Books & Games, which sold for $600 to Bret Parks of Winston-Salem, NC's Ssalefish Comics.

Other top-selling items included an uncut sheet of Magic the Gathering cards ($538) donated by Wizards of the Coast; a 1000% Lost Be@rbrick ($460) signed by the cast, producers and creator of Lost, donated by Medicom Toys; a Game Color Complete Range Display Unit ($275), donated by Acrylicos Vallejo; and a 1:1 scale replica of Mjolnir, Hammer of Thor ($255), donated by Windlass Studios. See below for a list of items auctioned for charity at the Baltimore Summit.

While bidding for the charity auctions ended following Monday night's dinner, the fun and fundraising continued at Tuesday's breakfast, when Diamond Vice-President of Operations Cindy Fournier auctioned herself off for a visit to the winning bidder's store on a TBD Wednesday (new comics day, naturally). The lucky (and generous) winner was Calum Johnston, owner of Halifax, Nova Scotia's Strange Adventures, who donated $500 to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund for the right to "employ" Fournier for a day. Halifax, Nova Scotia's Calum Johnston (left) donated $500 to the CBLDF for Diamond V-P of Operations Cindy Fournier to "work" in his store, Strange Adventures, on an upcoming New Comics Wednesday.

Proceeds from the Baltimore Summit Charity Auctions will go to one of three charities selected by the winning bidder:

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, the non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of First Amendment rights for members of the comic community;

ProLiteracy Worldwide, the oldest and largest non-governmental literacy organization in the world, which sponsors educational programs that help adults and their families acquire necessary literacy practices and skills; and

The Hero Initiative, the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the 2009 Retailer Summit Charity Auctions a success, especially the donating suppliers and all of the generous bidders and winners!
